Beyond being a restaurant dishing up great food, 18 Chefs is a social enterprise.It has helped delinquents and ex-offenders in giving them a second chance; getting employed and allow them to return and contribute to society.
In the past few years, it has gotten rave reviews from locals and successfully expanded from 1 to 4 branches, while continuing to make an impact on society.
We've the privilege of having, Mr. Bambang Widjaja, Operations Director of 18 Chefs to come down to NYP, to give the 1st ever social entrepreneurship talk in school. He will be sharing his experiences and introducing what are social enterprises.

We are having our 1st ever Social Entrepreneurship event in Nanyang Polytechnic!
18 Chefs is a successful restaurant chain, that is fast becoming a hot name amongst the local food scene. Beyond dishing up good food, 18 Chefs is a social enterprise.
Se Teo, owner of Eighteen Chefs and once an ex-offender, has helped delinquents and ex-offenders in giving them a second chance; getting employed and allow them to return and contribute to society.

Background Information
Owner Benny went in and out of prison four times for heroin addiction since the age of 14. After a near-death experience, he turned over a new leaf and started learning how to cook. From then, he got a month-long internship at Fifteen before setting up Eighteen Chefs with two of his church friends.
The number eighteen is a slang for an active local gang and also the number of chefs Benny hopes to have in his restaurants one day. Eighteen Chefs has since set up a second branch – 54-seat restaurant at Eastpoint Mall equally committed to training ex-offenders as chefs and keeping there away from crime.

It was an awesome night of creativity, ideas, innovation and laughs with Frederik Haren, a leading thinker in creativity in the world and author of “The Idea Book” and founder of interesting.org.
A total of 14 people from SIP @ NYP turned up for the event, and everyone had a great thought-provoking and fun time. 
We are very excited to announce that we’re expecting great things this year 2010!
We are in the midst of talks with various people in NYP, SEG, SBM and Student Affairs – to firmly establish our club this year. Even the School of Engineering has launched a new module, “Social Enterprise” for the new academic year of 2010/2011.
Our club is a new club, and hence we really need fresh passionate people to come on board!
We firmly believe that everyone has strengths and abilities, and we have many roles that you can take on or even create one for yourself.

The British Club is hosting Fredrik Haren at the Club on Wednesday, 28 April 2010 at 7.30pm.
