Social Enterprise Talk with Ms Penny Low

On 24th November 2010, we had the honour of having Ms. Penny Low at NYP to talk to students and members of our club about her experiences in social entrepreneurship and SIP. She gave an inspiring talk on projects going around in the world, and shared some personal insight from her travels.

Our members also had a good opportunity to converse with Ms. Low after the talk.

Exciting news everyone!

Ms. Penny Low Founder and President of Social Innovation Park (SIP) will be coming down to NYP to give a talk on social entrepreneurship. Ms Low is also founder of Planners-Hub Consultancy, Vice-Chairperson of Pasir Ris - Punggol Town Council, and the youngest elected female MP in Singapore.

She served in Government Parliamentary Committees for Ministry of Finance, Trade and Industry, and Community Development, Youth and Sports.

Penny is the Vice-chairman of the North East CDC, Vice-President of Consumers Association of Singapore, Chairperson of CaseTrust Advisory Council, Advisor to Natsteel Employees Union and the Small and Medium Enterprise Outreach Group, a member of the Parliamentary Chinese Community Liaison Commitee, the Global Voice Editorial Advisory Board of Financial Planning, and the Governing Council of Singapore Institute of Management (SIM).

Penny has traversed 50+ countries and was honoured as a founding member of the prestigious "Forum of Young Global Leaders" in 2005 and a "New Asian Leader" in 2004, by the Geneva-based World Economic Forum.

Having set up a local SIP chapter in Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), she will be having an open talk on 24th November 2010.

Beyond being a restaurant dishing up great food, 18 Chefs is a social enterprise.It has helped delinquents and ex-offenders in giving them a second chance; getting employed and allow them to return and contribute to society.

In the past few years, it has gotten rave reviews from locals and successfully expanded from 1 to 4 branches, while continuing to make an impact on society.

We've the privilege of having, Mr. Bambang Widjaja, Operations Director of 18 Chefs to come down to NYP, to give the 1st ever social entrepreneurship talk in school. He will be sharing his experiences and introducing what are social enterprises.

18 Chefs is a successful restaurant chain, that is fast becoming a hot name amongst the local food scene. Beyond dishing up good food, 18 Chefs is a social enterprise.

Se Teo, owner of Eighteen Chefs and once an ex-offender, has helped delinquents and ex-offenders in giving them a second chance; getting employed  and allow them to return and contribute to society.

Background Information

Owner Benny went in and out of prison four times for heroin addiction since the age of 14. After a near-death experience, he turned over a new leaf and started learning how to cook. From then, he got a month-long internship at Fifteen before setting up Eighteen Chefs with two of his church friends.

The number eighteen is a slang for an active local gang and also the number of chefs Benny hopes to have in his restaurants one day. Eighteen Chefs has since set up a second branch – 54-seat restaurant at Eastpoint Mall equally committed to training ex-offenders as chefs and keeping there away from crime.
