“NYP Gives Back”

In view of the recent natural disasters that occurred in Asia (massive flooding in Manila, Philippines and earthquake in Sumatra, Indonesia), our team at SIP @ NYP feels very compelled to do something to help the victims. We have come up with the following idea that we’re currently proposing to the school:

“NYP Gives Back!”

In essence, it is a flea-market concept event, which invites students to bring/make products and sell.

60% of the revenue will go to victims of the Sumatra earthquake (in collaboration with MercyRelief & Red Cross), 40% will be kept by students.

This would also be tied in with a mini-concert performed by the finalists of BandzOut 2009 (organized by SIT), who would perform and draw customers to the flea-market.

Objectives
1. To raise funds for the earthquake victims in Sumatra.
2. To nurture social entrepreneurship amongst Nanyang Polytechnic students, allowing them to make money and make a difference simultaneously.
3. To elevate NYP’s image, as not just an Innovative Polytechnic, but a school that cares for society, through creative entrepreneurship.
4. To promote awareness of social entrepreneurship and SIP @ NYP

Proposed Dates: 18^th and 19^th Nov 2009 (Wed-Thurs)

Why They Need Our Help

Many of the victims of the recent events, have lost their family members, friends and also their homes, and food supplies.

Some pictures of the devastation from Typhoon Ketsana that hit Philippines, include massive flooding, severe wreckage of many homes, thousands and thousands of homeless people.

About Us

Introduction

Established in early 2009, the Social Innovation Park (SIP) chapter at Nanyang Polytechnic is the first of its kind in the local polytechnic landscape.

The chapter aspires to pave the way in educating and engaging polytechnic students about social entrepreneurship. It hopes to achieve this through forums, interactive workshops, social media and ground-up initiatives

 

Objectives:
1. To promote social entrepreneurship to students
2. To educate & groom future champions of social entrepreneurship.
3. To enable youths to channel their energies and knowledge to help social enterprises

Activities:
The objectives will be achieved through 3 main roles

Role	Activities
Thought Leader    A think tank where members research social enterprise, write articles, and debate on current issues in social entrepreneurship.	a. Social Entrepreneurship Forums (Once/Twice a year) Renowned social entrepreneurs will be invited to share their innovative ideas and experiences about social entrepreneurship to educate and inspire students. b. Interactive Meetings (Once a fortnight) Usual club meetings centre around routine discussions about club affairs or planning for upcoming events. Ours will go beyond that to include interactive presentations by members to members, on topics pertinent to social entrepreneurship. c. Workshops (Once every quarter) These open workshops can be an individual or joint effort with other SIP chapters, to teach practical skills and knowledge to anyone interested in social entrepreneurship. d. Online Community Members can share and exchange their perspectives, experiences through the main website, through blogging and the other vast variety of social media.
Action Leader   An organization that starts social enterprise initiatives, works with local social enterprises, and persuades corporate entities into becoming socially responsible companies.	a. Social Entrepreneurship Bazaar (Twice a year) Invite social entrepreneurs from SIP’s PaTH (Pop and Talent Hub) down once every semester for a 2-day long event. b. PaTH (Pop and Talent Hub) Students can tap from SIP’s PaTH platform at Vivocity to have a hands-on experience on starting up mini social entrepreneurship projects. c .Social Entrepreneurship Initiatives (Flexible) When the club has grown to a considerable size, members can come together to do projects with social enterprises.
Networking Platform   A platform that provides opportunities for leaders of the people, private, and public sector to interact with each other, with the goal of fostering collaborations and joint social enterprise initiatives between sectors	a. Collaboration with SIP chapters Being a chapter of SIP enables us to interact with chapters outside school (e.g. SIM, Japan, India, China), which in turn, helps to make room for possible future collaborations and joint-learning opportunities. b. Collaboration with social enterprises linked to SIP Being a chapter of SIP also enables to tap from their vast contacts of social enterprises, voluntary welfare organizations, etc.

SIP CHAPTERS

The aim of SIP Chapters is to create platforms worldwide that support the exchange for ideas, network and innovations to build a more inclusive, sustainable and better world. 

Each chapter plays an active role by
developing the social entrepreneurship movement in their local or school community, contributing in to the success of the social entrepreneurship movement worldwide. 

Local & International Chapters

 
SIP began forming SIP Chapters at major institutes of higher learning in Singapore in 2007.

Each SIP Chapter in Singapore is a student-led movement to promote social entrepreneurship and Innovation.  Foreign leaders catalyze change in their local or school communities through International SIP Chapters.

The first International SIP Chapter was founded at Yale University, USA in Fall 2007.  Since then, International Chapters have started at Fudan University, China (2008), and in Japan (2008), Kashmir (2008), and Indonesia (2008). 

What chapters do?

SIP Chapters initiate their own projects and events and also partner with SIP, social entrepreneurs and the public and private sector on meaningful projects.  Past projects have included speaking events with Singapore Social Entrepreneurs of the Year, organizing a social enterprise Bazaar similar to SIP’s PaTH Market, running a social enterprise business plan competition, developing online platforms, and creating or assisting a social enterprise.
